I hope you are enjoying your long weekend. The Super Learners had a fun time celebrating Valentine's Day on Friday. Thank you for bringing in items for our celebration and for coming in and hanging out with us.
Since it is a short week our schedule is a bit wonky. We will be having P.E on Wednesday, so please be sure to wear appropriate shoes.
Math-We started module 6 on this past week "Foundations of Multiplication and Division." We are working on repeated addition and groups of objects.
Reading-This week we will be starting our new unit called "Amping up Reading Power." This unit focuses on strategies that students learned and worked on at the beginning of the year, but now are using these strategies again in their "bigger" books.
Writing-We are also starting a new writing unit this week, which is opinion writing. We have been studying different communities for social studies, and will be writing a variety of opinion letters including one on "which community is the best place to live."
Field trip- I'm waiting on the front office to let me know who is cleared to drive and I will get back to parents who volunteered to drive, to let you know if you will be joining us. Since tickets are limited for the play, we will only be asking 7 parents to drive. For our May field trip to CPK if you are not selected to drive, but would like to meet us there, then please do!
Boots & Bowties-The Creekside live auction will be held on Saturday, March 7 from 6-10pm. If you cannot attend the auction, be on the lookout for our online auction items. The 2nd grade teachers will be throwing a "Cupcakes and Candyland" party and an after school art party. 2 lucky students from each class will get to join Mrs. Spalasso, Mrs.Sill, and myself. Our annual auction is crucial in maintaining the additional supports and staff that make Creekside amazing (Technology, Art, Library, Paras - just to name a few). Happy Bidding!
I hope you all had a great 3 day weekend :)
Math-The students were given the module 5 post assessment last week. We are ahead of schedule so we will be spending this week working on word problems and playing regrouping games, before we start module 6.
Reading-We are digging deep into our books and still focusing on our characters. While reading, readers make predictions about what will happen to a character. We often think about the problems that a character faces and ask..."what would I do if I had this problem? How would I try to work it out or get what I want?" "Does this character act a certain way over and over again? What does that make me think about how they will work out their problem?"
Writing-The Super Learners are writing different drafts each day in writers workshop. Each day there is a new mini lesson taught and the hope is that after the lesson the students will include that days topic in their writing. Some of the mini lessons include showing not telling when describing their characters emotions in their story, adding in dialogue, BIG BOLD words, setting the scene, hitting at the problem, and using describing words.
**Please be on the look-out for paperwork coming home today regarding our class dojo points and upcoming field trips!
Our 2nd Grade Para-
Ms. G is our amazing 2nd grade para educator. She provides enrichment, as well as extra support for students through small group instruction in reading, writing, and math in each of the second grade classrooms. The individual support she is able to offer makes a substantial difference in the classroom. With a classroom of 25 students, the extra one on one support can also make a world of difference. Ms. G is also very well connected to the students since she provides support during their lunch break. We are so fortunate to have this extra help. This would not be possible without your support of our Creekside Comet Fund. So a BIG thank you all that have donated to our Comet Fund.
I hope you all had a lovely weekend! It was so great to be back in the classroom last week, and it was so fun getting to know the kids.
Math-We are continuing our regrouping unit and have been working hard to not just give our answer but to show our work so we can explain the process that got us to the answer. Regrouping is challenging and the students are doing wonderfully.
Reading-Our character unit ties in perfectly with our writing unit about characters. The Super Learners are reading fiction books and noticing traits about the characters in their books. Last week they were digging into their books and using post it’s to write down their traits and providing evidence to answer the question “what happened in the book that gives you the idea your character is...(kind, positive, athletic, etc). We also circled back to strategies used at the beginning of the year “stop and jot” and “stop, think, and retell” to understand the story.
Writing-We started our realistic fiction unit and the kids had a great time creating a character, giving them outside and inside traits, giving them a name, and brainstorming realistic problems they could go through.
Homework-This weeks Google Classroom assignment is posted. You can access it by clicking on the link at the end of this email (the link takes you to our classroom website). I will be sending home DreamBox login information with your student on Tuesday, if they would like to login at home. DreamBox strategically increases the learning velocity for all students and gives continuous formative assessments to provide the right next lesson for each individual learner. Passwords are the same from last year, and some students remember their login.
I hope you all had a relaxing and joyful holiday break. It was so great meeting the kids before the Winter break. I’m so excited to start 2020 in the classroom with the Super Learners. I will be sending an email at the beginning of each week to keep you in the loop as to what we are up to in the classroom with academics and activities.
Math-The students will continue to work in Module 5 “Addition and subtraction within 1,000 with word problems to 100.” Leading up to the break the students were adding within 1,000 and now we will be subtracting.
Reading-The non-fiction reading unit was concluded and the next unit is a character unit. The students will examine characters from their books and understand their character traits and how they might change throughout the book.
Writing-Our Realistic Fiction unit is my favorite writing unit of the year. The students are so creative and write wonderful realistic stories involving characters they have created, and bring them to life. This unit ties in wonderfully with the reading unit.
Upcoming Super Learners- *Please let me know if you did not receive a Super Learner poster at the beginning of the year.
Hi Super Learners! I'm SO excited to be your 2nd grade teacher this school year. However, we won't be meeting until Halloween. My daughter Quinn was born at the end of last school year, so I will be at home spending time with her and her sister, Brooklyn. Ms. Behm will be your teacher in the meantime and she is SO wonderful. You will have a blast learning with her. I can't wait to see you in a couple of months.
