Happy Monday Super Learner Families,
I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend! Jose, Brooklyn, and I are welcoming another baby into our family this June. We are so excited!! I shared the news with the kids today. I will be here with the Super Learners until the end of the school year :)
Math-We are working in module 5 "Addition and Subtraction Within 1,000 with Word Problems to 100.” We will wrap up this week.
Reading-The kids are working on strategies that we worked on at the beginning of the year, but in their current "just right" books.
Writing-We are writing realistic fiction stories. The kids are enjoying using their imagination to create characters and giving them realistic problems to overcome in their stories. This week they will choose one of their drafts to revise for their final draft.
CogAT - CogAT starts TOMORROW, February 5th, 6th, & 7th for all second graders, with makeup days the following week. Testing will be done in the morning and be completed each day before the first recess, so it is very important that your child comes to school on time. Any child that comes to school later than 8:15 will have to stay in the office until recess as the classes cannot be disturbed by phone calls or people entering or leaving. It is also important that your child gets plenty of rest and has good breakfast. The test results should be arriving to parents via Parent Portal in April.
Field Trip - We will be going to see Dragons Love Tacos in Walnut Creek, on February 28th. Please sign and return the second page of the packet that went home, if you have not already. I will let the parents know this week who will be joining us, after Kathy in the office gets back to me about who is cleared and has the necessary paperwork updated. Thank you :)
VALENTINES DAY: Please have your child bring 25 (we have 26 students) Valentines to school. They should sign their name only and NOT list the recipient’s name in order to streamline the delivery process. For example: To:________ From: Mrs. Rodriguez. We are having a small celebration in the morning that day with just the students. We will be doing Valentine math games, having some snacks, and there will be some other fun things for the kids to do :)
I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend! There is a lot of information in this week’s news. Please read carefully so you don’t miss anything!
CogAT -The CogAT (GATE) test is approaching soon. This test is given to provide teachers and parents with information about students' cognitive development, ability to learn new tasks, and problem solving abilities. CogAT test days are February 5th, 6th, & 7th for all second graders, with makeup days the following week and practice in class the week prior to the test (January 28th-February 1st).
CogAT: Important Info - Today your child is coming home with a green paper about the CogAT in their Comet Folder that explains more about having to take the test. If you choose to have your child not take the test (opt-out) you will need to send me an email stating that by Friday, February 1st.
Field Trip - Today your child is also coming home with a field trip packet for our upcoming field trip to see Dragons Love Tacos in Walnut Creek. on February 28th. Please sign and return the second page for your child to attend. If you wish to drive please return the whole packet with the front page filled out. We are limited on how many drivers we may have since tickets are already purchased. We will not be able to tag any parents who do not want to drive on this field trip. Drivers/chaperones will be selected with these considerations: 1. Who has already been a driver/chaperone 2. How many students can be accommodated 3. Driver clearance.
Homework - Homework has been posted for this week. Sorry for the delay.
100th Day of School, Dress like you’re 100: Wednesday, January 30th is the 100th day of school. We will celebrate the day by coming to school dressed as if we are 100 years old. Students can be as creative as possible to dress as if they are 100. Some suggestions are robes, fake glasses, gray or white hair, rollers, vests, etc. We will be doing some other in class activities as well. This is a fun and hilarious way to celebrate the day.
VALENTINES DAY: Please have your child bring 25 (we have 26 students) Valentines to school. They should sign their name only and NOT list the recipient’s name in order to streamline the delivery process. For example: To:________ From: Mrs. Rodriguez. I will let you know as soon as possible if there will be a Valentines Day celebration, it is still in the works!
Our field trip to the Danville Library is this Thursday, October 18th. If you filled out a library card application request, your Super Learner will receive their card on Thursday at the library. If they already have a library card, then please send it to school with them on the day of our field trip, in a ziplock bag. I will hold onto them and help the students check out a book with their card. The books can be returned to any Contra Costa library when they are done reading them. We will be leaving campus at 10:30 and will be arriving back to school around 1:15. We will be eating lunch in front of the library on the big grassy field. Please be sure to pack a lunch in a disposable bag with disposable items inside.
*PLEASE bring your PINK Super Learner shirt to school by Wednesday. The kids will be wearing their shirt on every class field trip. Please put their initials on the inside tag.
-This Thursday the kids have a half day, they will be dismissed at 11:50 AM.
-This Friday is a Staff Work Day, no school for the kids.
-Next week, Monday through Friday, the kids will be dismissed at 11:50 (conference week)
-Our field trip to the Danville Library is on Thursday, October 18th. If you have not already, please complete the permission slip form (it went home last week but is also attached) and send it in. If your child does not already have a Contra Costa library card, there is a request form that is attached, you can fill that out and your student will receive their new card on the day of our library visit.
-If your child already has a library card, please send that in with them on the day of our field trip, in a ziplock bag. I will hold onto them and help the students check out a book with their card. The books can be returned to any Contra Costa library when they are done reading them. If that is too much of a hassle you can bring the books to school and I will drop them off at the Danville library, on my way home.
October Conference Sign-UP
This Friday is our Comet Chase. Our Super Learners are running/walking at 12:35. This is RIGHT after lunch so I encourage you to pack your student a filling but light lunch! It's a bummer that our time is right after lunch, I don't want any of the kids feeling sick as they are running or walking! Please send your child to school in comfortable clothing and shoes, so they can run/walk for 30 minutes. If you are available, please head to school, check in, and head to the field to cheer on the 2nd graders!! :)
We have class T-shirts that are being delivered on Thursday after school, so the kids can wear them for the Comet Chase on Friday!! :)
*Library is on Mondays so please remind your student to return their books, so they are able to check out two more.
We are working on module 3 in math "Place Value, Counting, and Comparison of Numbers to 1,000"
We are wrapping up our narrative writing unit and will begin our information writing unit next.
In writers workshop we are working on digging deeper in our texts and strengthening our inferencing skills, before we move onto Nonfiction books, which is our next unit.
Today the kids are coming home with their blue comet folders stuffed with a few papers. One of the papers has directions on how to access Google Classroom, which is where they will be doing their writing homework for next week. Directions are also on the 2nd grade website. For reference, see below…
Google Classroom Login Information:
User Name: Example: email@example.com (first letter of your students first name followed by their last name)
Your child's password: Example: ID#123456 "ID# their 6 digit student ID" (can be found on your online Parent Portal)
To access the homework page, click on the “homework site” tab on our class website and then click on “DOWNLOAD HOMEWORK HERE."
Their DreamBox username and password are taped inside their comet folder.
Please don’t forget to write back to your student in their Friday journal, or just sign your initials. Some friends had a challenging time focusing and getting much written.
*If your student is not using their time wisely during designated work times in class, please expect for them to be bringing their work home to continue working. The Super Learners know that if they use work time to play then they will be spending time finishing their work at recess or at home. I don’t expect for work to be completed in the allotted time I give them, but if they are busy talking and playing, it is obvious that they are not staying focused and working hard.
Next week we will be on a “typical” bell schedule. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday we will be dismissed at 2:30 and Wednesday at 1:20.
So great meeting you/seeing you on Monday evening at Back to School Night! I just wanted to recap what I mentioned regarding homework.
If you go to our class website mrsrodriguezsclass.com and click on the tab "Homework Site" and click "Download Homework Here" it takes you to the 2nd grade homework site. This week it says under "reading" to read for 20 minutes a night and record their reading on the reading log. I mentioned that while there is no reading log this week, please do read. Under "math" it says to work on DreamBox for 20 minutes 3 times this week, and as mentioned, DreamBox has been giving me login trouble. So hopefully I can get it up and running by tomorrow, and it will be ready to go for next week!
It is blank under spelling and writing, so there is no homework in those subjects.
Next week our writing assignments on Google Classroom will begin. I will be getting each student on google classroom by Friday so they will know how to access it at home.

Hi Super Leaner Families,
We had such a happy first week of school. It was so great meeting you, if I had the opportunity to say hello in line!!
If your student has not brought in their “Me Bag” yet, please bring the bags back by this Tuesday so your student can share a little about themselves to their new classmates. A piece of paper was in their comet folder after the first day, letting you know about "Flashlight Friday" and bringing in a family photo. Please send in a family photo when you get a chance, and a flashlight by this Friday!! :)
If you are on this email list and would not like to receive weekly updates from me, please respond and ask me to take you off of my list. Or if someone in your family would like to be added, let me know as well!
Reading- This week we are working hard as readers and focusing more on practicing our reading strategies as we read independently. As 2nd grade readers we “grow like beanstalks” and…
Finding the answer is GREAT but we use strategies to show how we got to the answer.
Nuts and Bolts-
-PLEASE send your student with a water bottle each day, our classroom sink is unavailable.
-Be sure to send a snack for your student to have each morning at recess, often times they are very hungry as we are approaching lunch time.
-We line up every morning before school on the race track and I will come get the kids :) If you are in the halls, you need to sign in and get a visitor badge in the office.
-Make sure your child knows where you are picking them up each day after school.
The kids will continue to be released at 1:20 each day this week.
The assessment schedule is as follows for this week. The students that are being assessed will be released at 2:30 with grades 3-5, to where you would typically pick them up.

Beginning of the Year Assessment Day Schedule
This year your student is asked to stay after school to complete a couple of academic assessments. These assessments will help me to learn about your student’s academic journey and to provide academic goals for your student. Please see the schedule below to see when your student will need to stay after school for his/her assessments. On each assessment day each student listed will stay in the classroom together until all students have been assessed. Students will be assessed one-on-one as well as through independent online assessments. At the end of each assessment day your student will be dismissed to their designated pick-up location at 2:30 p.m. Please make sure your student knows where they are to go (flagpole for carpool, fire gate for parent pick-up, meeting a sibling in a specified location, Kids Country).
